LANSING, Michigan (WILX) – Studies show that drinking three or more sugary drinks a week increases the chance of developing pre-diabetes, a condition that leads to diabetes, by 46%. But which drinks can have the opposite effect and actually lower your risk?

“A lot of times people don’t know when their blood sugar is borderline,” says Dr. Amber Champion, an endocrinologist at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

A study in China found that drinking four or more cups of black, green or oolong tea a day reduced the risk of developing diabetes by 17%. Another study in Japan found that people who drank three cups of coffee a day were 33% less likely to develop type 2 diabetes than those who drank less than one cup a week. I understand.
