Where to drink in Dallas right now: 5 restaurants & bars with fun flights


For many people, January is the time to get away from the excess vacations that have come before. Join the gym, start a new diet, cut back on alcohol. Those are all good ideas.

But CultureMap’s monthly column Where to Drink is in another realm. The reason it exists is to serve recommended cocktails and drinks. We do not back down from that mission. Everyone else is making mocktail lists, but we use flights. Rather than serving one drink at a time, it offers multiple drinks so you can mix and match.

Here are five restaurants and bars that make flying fun.

Akira Back
The Japanese restaurant at The Colony’s Grandscape is part of jet-setter chef Akira Back’s global chain and offers innovative, highly shareable dishes such as specialty pizzas topped with thinly shaved rare tuna slices. It serves modern Japanese cuisine. They offer great sake-themed flights in four categories: Light & Crisp, Fruity & Floral, Feminine & Intense, Rich & Bold. provides a great entry point.

Cantina Laredo
For $16, Tex-Mex chain Cantina Laredo goes big with its limited-edition nostalgic ‘Flight Down Margarita Lane,’ featuring its trademark margaritas in flight formats such as Perfect Patron ‘Rita, Grilled Peach ‘Rita, and Sangria Swirl. We are celebrating our 75th anniversary. Don’t worry, we also have full size cocktails available. Starting Thursday, January 17th, and running through Monday, April 10th in our Addison, Frisco, and Tyler locations.

Gillespie’s Tavern
Richardson’s Irish Pub offers all the basics of a pub, including whiskey, imported beers, and traditional pub food such as fish and chips and Shepherd’s Pie. They have a huge inventory of bourbon, scotch and Irish whiskeys. The Buffalo Family with Texas-themed flights and his four bourbons from Buffalo Trace.

Snooze on AM Eatery
One of the attractions of this bustling Denver-based breakfast chain is its full bar stocked with cocktails, beers and spiked coffee. Grab a drink if you want and enjoy Pancake His Flight featuring his three signature flapjacks: pineapple upside down pancake, blueberry Danish pancake and sweet potato pancake.

Thirsty Lion Gastropub
No flight wrap-up would be complete without a beer flight. This Arizona-based chain has you covered with craft beer flights that let you taste six beers for $12. Their Texas Flight is like Lone Star Greatest Hits, featuring Carbach Kolsch, Deep Elm Dallas Blonde, Community Mosaic IPA, Texas Ale Project Fire Ant Funeral Amber Ale, Peticola Velvet Hammer Red, and 512 Pecan Porter. All four locations: Preston Hollow, The Colony, Irving, and Euless.
