Home of Pinot Noir in Burgundy (or burgundy, as it is known in its home country) is a go-to when you have an appetite for this breed. It means “black pine” in French and gets its name from the dense clusters of grapes that look like pine cones. Even at entry level, ‘Bourgogne Pinot Noir’ and ‘Bourgogne Rouge’ are excellent if they come from quality producers. From north to south, Burgundy’s four main red wine regions are the Côte de Nuits, the Haute Côtes de Nuits, the Côtes de Beaune, and the Côte Chalonnaise.
95% of the wines made in the Côte de Nuits are red wines and come from legendary appellations such as Nuits Saint-Georges, Gevrey-Chambertin, Vosne-Romanée, Chambord-Musigny and the walled Clos de Vougeot vineyards. Lesser-known but less impressive in the glass are the neighboring Fixin and Morey-Saint-Denis. The majority of red Grand Cru appellations are found on the Côte de Nuits. Further south, the Côte de Beaune is home to Pinot Noir powerhouses Pommard, Pernand-Vergelès, Alrose-Corton, Volnay and Beaune, the region’s largest city.
Unlike many firmer versions from the New World and other parts of Europe, Burgundy Pinot Noir has an elegance and lightness you wouldn’t expect from a red wine. In addition to the classic flavors of cherry, raspberry and cassis flavors are joined by earthy notes of truffle and forest floor, with a touch of black pepper and baking his spices. Its moderate acidity and soft tannins make it a great companion to a wide range of non-red meat dishes such as roast chicken, grilled tuna and salmon, Peking duck, mushroom-based pastas and risottos.
