The number of drunk driving cases in 2022 is on the rise, leading to more incidents resulting in injuries and deaths, and more arrests.
Drunk driving to increase in 2022
In the first nine months of 2022, there were 118 drunk-driving accidents that resulted in injury or death, 14 more than in the same period in 2021.
The number of offenders arrested for DUI also increased by 161 from 1,088 in the first nine months of 2021 to 1,249 in the same period of 2022.
However, these numbers are lower than those recorded in 2019, before the Covid-19 pandemic.
“It’s up to you to drink or drive”
Minister of State Mohammed Faishal Ibrahim revealed this data when he launched the Drunk Driving Prevention Campaign 2022 on December 22nd.
The campaign, jointly organized by the Traffic Police (TP) and the Singapore Road Safety Council (SRSC), was launched at Ten Square at the Landmark of Good, according to a Dec. 24 Singapore Police news release.
This year’s tagline is ‘Drink or drive, it’s up to you’, reminding drivers to choose only one of two options: don’t drive if you plan to drink at the end of the year festivities.

Faishal said in his speech that this is an annual campaign to educate the public about the dangers of drunk driving and to remind road users to drink responsibly.

Non-drivers can also do their part by reminding friends to avoid drinking and driving, Faishal added.
