Nobel laureate Michael Kremer appreciates Odisha’s Drink from Tap Mission



Bhubaneswar: Professor Michael Kremer, a Nobel Prize-winning economist, recently visited Puri and Bhubaneswar to investigate the impact of Odisha’s flagship program, the Drink From Tap Mission.

Michael Robert Kremer, an American development economist, is currently working as a college professor of economics and public policy at the University of Chicago.

A team of five, led by Professor Kremer and Benjamin Krause, Executive Director of the Development Innovation Lab, interacted with consumers and Jal Sathis during the visit.

They appreciated Orissa’s efforts to provide 24/7 drinking water from tap water to all households, especially the urban poor, and the significant socio-economic impact caused by the mission. .

The team also spoke with G Mathi Vathanan, Chief Secretary of the Housing and Urban Development Division to learn more about the Drink from Tap mission, the JAGA mission and other transformational initiatives the division is working on.

Professor Michael Kremer and Professor G Mathi Vathanan discussed areas of cooperation and explored opportunities to strengthen the long-term strategic partnership between the University of Chicago, USA and the Government of Orissa. The discussion was attended by senior officials from the H&UD department and his members of the team who accompanied Professor Kremer.
