NEWCASTLE United star Joe Lington has been charged with DUI.
The 26-year-old midfielder was arrested at 1:20 am after being stopped by police in the city.
He is currently facing charges and is scheduled to appear before the Newcastle Magistrate’s Court on 26 January.
Northumbria Police said: “Shortly before 1:20 this morning, [Thursday] Officers pulled over the vehicle and arrested the occupants in the Pontland Road area of Newcastle,” a police spokesman said.
“Joelington Cassio, 26, of Ponteland, was subsequently charged for exceeding the stipulated alcohol limit.
“He is scheduled to appear before the Newcastle magistrate on 26 January.”
Newcastle boss Eddie Howe and the Premier League club are aware of the incident, The Times reports.
Joelinton’s arrest came the day after Newcastle beat Leicester 2-0 in the League Cup.
The Brazilian star scored the second goal to help the Magpies reach the semi-finals.
Newcastle will face Fulham in the Premier League next Sunday.
It’s not clear whether Joelinton’s indictment will jeopardize his chances of making the last eleven.
The midfielder was acquired by Newcastle from Hoffenheim for £40m in 2019.
Since then he has been a key part of Eddie Howe’s team.
