Chief Cabinet Secretary Hirokazu Matsuno.
A secretary to the Japanese government’s top spokesperson intends to resign after being served a traffic ticket for drunk driving, his boss, Chief Cabinet Secretary Hirokazu Matsuno, said in a statement on Saturday.
In an apology to the public for his policy secretary’s actions, Matsuno said he was taking the issue “very seriously” and that “oversight and control were not adequate.”
A secretary who works for Matsuno’s constituency office in Chiba Prefecture, east of Tokyo, plans to submit his resignation to the House of Representatives on Monday.
According to Matsuno, the 49-year-old secretary drank alone at an izakaya in Chiba city for about an hour from 7 p.m. for interrogation.
A breathalyzer test revealed that his alcohol content exceeded the legal limit, and he was given a traffic ticket.
According to Matsuno, the secretary drank about three glasses of shochu-diluted spirits, but when the designated driver service could not be reached, he said, “I thoughtlessly decided to drive myself.”
