Drink-driver had children in car

Dunedin police remained disappointed with a drunk driver last weekend. Among them, he was found drinking five times the legal alcohol limit in a car with two children in it, and was charged with endangering adolescents. women were also included.

Chief Sergeant Anthony Bond of Dunedin said police stopped the 44-year-old woman on Portobello Road around 5:30 pm on Friday.

The woman had two children in the car at the time, aged 5 and 15, Bond said.

She was arrested and charged with DUI and endangering a child.

Later that night, at about 9:00 pm, police stopped a 21-year-old man who had a breath alcohol level of 1257 mcg.

The man told officers he had been drinking with friends in his apartment.

Both drivers had their licenses suspended and will appear in court along with another driver who recorded a breath alcohol level of 600mcg, Snr Sgt Bond said.

Five other drivers were also ticketed while intoxicated.

While it was disappointing that someone was arrested for driving under the influence, there was concern that two drivers stopped by police over the weekend had been blown over 1200mcg.

There were many other options that didn’t involve getting behind the wheel while intoxicated.

“If you’ve been drinking, don’t drive. Make other arrangements,” said Snr Sgt Bond.

Police continue to go out and conduct a breath test on the driver.
