If you’re a fan of Regency-era (and earlier) literature like I am, you’ve probably seen multiple (and frequent) mentions of drinking chocolate, also known as Parisian hot chocolate. Alternatively, you may have learned about it from Joan Hari’s 1999 novel Chocolat. The novel was released the following year as a lush and charming film starring French actress and dancer Juliette Binoche. The Mayans are believed to have created the first chocolate he drink about 2,500 to 3,000 years ago, proving once again how advanced the Maya civilization was. For all these reasons, I was intrigued by decadent drinks many years ago and started making them at home.
But a few months ago, I was delighted to find that Piety and Desire Chocolate’s Café au Chocolat on Magazine Street was “on tap.” At the café, you can also purchase the company’s artistic and delicious chocolates, so it’s the perfect place to do some holiday shopping while strengthening your body with chocolates and coffee drinks.
I’m thrilled to have access to ready-made drink chocolates whenever I’m in Magazine Street, but I highly recommend making your own. It’s so easy and the payoff is incredible. It’s a really meaningful time.

material
- 4 ounces milk or alternative plant milk
- 3 ounces dark or bittersweet chocolate
- A pinch of salt of course
- brown sugar, to taste

In a saucepan, heat the milk of your choice to a boil, add the chocolate, stir until creamy, and add a pinch of salt. If you like it sweeter, add brown sugar.
