In the United States alone, 58 million pounds of chocolate are purchased and consumed on Valentine’s Day. That’s a lot of love! And while much of it is edible on its own, those of us who love wine can enhance our pleasure by pairing it perfectly with a savory treat. It’s a wine with a lot of. Dark or bittersweet chocolates with high cocoa percentages (72% or more) pair well with strong red wines like Barolo or Napa Cab. Otherwise, stick to the sweet stuff.

We often drink red wine with fish and white wine with meat, so we don’t believe there are hard and fast rules for wine pairing, but we do have one guideline. Sweet wines made from white grapes such as Sauternes, Tokaj or Madeira, pair well with white or light milk chocolate, especially fruit. Sweet wines made from red grapes, such as port and passito rosso, go well with dark or dark milk chocolate, plain or with nuts and caramel. This advice also applies to desserts. Sweet white wines are best paired with flan, creme brulee, or cheesecake. A sweet red wine pairs well with chocolate cake, chocolate mousse, or brownies.
