Boston, Massachusetts (WWLP) – The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection’s (MassDEP) Small and Disadvantaged Communities Grant Program awarded five communities grants for water quality improvement projects.
A small disadvantaged system is defined as a system that serves less than 10,000 residents and cannot afford to remedy drinking water health-based water quality violations. The program is funded through MassDEP and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Water Infrastructure Improvement for Nation (WIIN) Act Support for Small and Disadvantaged Communities Drinking Water Subsidies Program.
The communities of Belchertown, Chester, Lancaster, Monroe and Plymouth will receive funding for drinking water infrastructure projects to continue to meet federal Safe Drinking Water Act requirements.

The following grants were awarded.
- Sports Haven Mobile Home Park (Belchertown) – $200,000: Installation of water storage tanks, emergency generators, and pump rooms (partial investment).
- Chester Water Authority (Chester) – $50,000: In this project, we will put a carbon layer on the filter of the treatment system.
- Lancaster Woods Condominium (Lancaster) – $77,000: The project includes the engineering and design of a new water storage tank and upgrade of the booster pump system.
- Monroe Water District (Monroe) – $88,000: The project includes drilling and installation of new wells.
- Long Pond Realty (Plymouth) – $21,000: This project includes the design and permitting of a new pH regulator.
